SUNG KWAN MA PHOTOGRAPHER
Over 15 years immersed in documentary filmmaking and visual arts, following real life wherever it happens across Seoul, Korea, and around the globe in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, Thailand, Myanmar, Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Ukraine, Russia, and beyond.
A graduate of the City College of New York (BA in Photography) and an alumnus of the renowned Eddie Adams Workshop—supported by the Mortimer Hays-Brandeis Traveling Fellowship from Brandeis University—my visual foundation is rooted in rigorous photojournalism and documentary ethics. Grounded in a Korean heritage and a global vision, I treat the camera simply as a tool to pay attention to people and the world around them.
Now based in New York after decades of international storytelling, my work as a visual artist and cinematographer focuses strictly on direct observation. Whether filming communities in complex regions worldwide or capturing the intimate, multi-day rituals of weddings in New York and across cultural landscapes, I never try to direct the scene or act as a host. I prefer to let life unfold naturally, capturing unscripted moments as they happen.
That same unvarnished, observational approach guides everything I do—from independent documentary projects and cinematic portraits to editorial wedding celebrations. My goal is always to keep things real and honest, letting the actual environment and the people in it tell the story.
